Meet Abby, your cake artist!

Hi 👋 thank you for stopping by! I'm Abby, a largely self-taught, self-made cake artist, with well over a decade of experience in the cake decorating industry.

I have loved baking from early childhood and have many fond memories of weekends spent baking cakes and cupcakes with my mum (who was also a cake decorator) and learning the more traditional bakes (think scones, apple turnovers and the most delicious pastry) with my wonderful nan who, to this day, still bakes every single week.

My real cake journey started at the age of 18 after studying Art & Design at college. My little sister was obsessed with the bunny character Miffy and the supermarkets back then didn't sell any premade cakes that would do the job. I asked mum to teach me the basics of sugarcraft so I could make her a birthday cake and it was after that first experience at cake decorating, I took my first steps into self-employment with My Cupcake Box.

When I launched My Cupcake Box nowhere in my area specialised in cupcakes and I very quickly built up a large customer base which led me to develop an eye for perfection and subsequently go on to perfect my skills with dedicated sugarcraft courses at Brooklands College, in addition to the constant self-learning of new techniques.

Armed with new skills and experience I decided to widen my cake portfolio and renamed the business to suit.

Incredibly similar to my name now, it was formed by combining both my name and my sister's name, Ella. I wanted something short and catchy and as baking is a huge part of what I do - BakeAbella was born.

I successfully ran BakeAbella for 5 years at which time I had several fabulous opportunities. I grew a fantastic relationship with the owners of The Boileroom music venue in Guildford and would create all of their birthday and event cakes year after year.

I later took a 3-year break to try something I had always dreamed of, running my very own coffee shop.  My partner Robert and I took over a little coffee shop in St Johns Village in Woking which we renamed Penny Blacks Coffee House as the premises used to be the old village post office several years ago and the penny black was the world's first adhesive postage stamp.

We turned what was a cold and uninviting space into a warm and cosy place to relax and meet up with friends. We hired the best staff, served the most delicious coffee and more importantly, turned the business around in just 6 short months.

I baked every day at the coffee shop, creating seasonal brownies and blondies, layer cakes, traybakes and the best selling chocolate chip cookies as well as bespoke celebration cakes when I had the time. My bakes were such a hit with our customers that I would still be baking at 9pm some evenings just to keep up with the demand!

After the steep learning curve that is owning and running a coffee shop, at the end of 2016 we made the hard decision to sell due to Robert's full-time work commitments and the need to relocate so it was only natural that I resumed my passion for cake decorating.

My coffee shop

After the steep learning curve that is owning and running a coffee shop, at the end of 2016 we made the hard decision to sell due to Robert's full-time work commitments and the need to relocate so it was only natural that I resumed my passion for cake decorating.

Since 2017 based in Wokingham, Berkshire I created bespoke wedding cakes, celebration cakes and used my own coffee shop experience to supply local coffee shops with freshly baked goods. With a constant fully-booked diary I was absolutely delighted to be awarded Wokingham's Top 3 Cake Maker by Three Best Rated consecutively for 2020 and 2021.

Now, with over 17 years of professional experience to my name and a new permanent home for my business to flourish in Devizes, Wiltshire - I am here to stay!
